I’m Jim S. I got sober at 27 through Alcoholics Anonymous in 1987, and I have stayed sober since then.

AA saved my life. It is also a human institution, with habits, dogma, and resistance to change. I write about both: what has worked for me, what has not, and where recovery culture deserves a more skeptical look.

I am not interested in building a recovery persona or selling you a program. I am interested in honest experience, sound evidence, and the fact that people recover through more than one pathway. My view is that shame rarely helps and no single theory explains every person’s alcohol use or recovery.

I’m an atheist who has stayed sober in AA since 1987. If you want recovery writing without religious pressure or manufactured certainty, you are in the right place.
