Eyes of Gratitude Prayer

God, thank you for the life you have given me, and all that lies ahead.  Help me see all the opportunities that exist now, in this, and every moment.

Grant me an awareness of the miracles and gifts contained in each moment, the wonders of our bodies and minds, and all that has passed both personally and collectively that has brought us and me to now.

Compel me to act decisively when required with urgency or patience always from the perspective of love and abundance.

Help me see life and all in it with the eyes of gratitude empowered to go forth driven by a thankful, warm, and compassionate heart.

The Eyes of Gratitude Prayer is a short but powerful prayer used in AA and other recovery programs to shift perspective from lack to abundance. It invites us to see life through grateful eyes — a practice that can transform daily experience, especially for those in early recovery who are learning to live without alcohol or drugs.

What the Eyes of Gratitude Prayer Means

The opening lines ask for gratitude for life itself — not just the highlights, but all that lies ahead, including the unknown. This is significant for people in recovery, who often live with a lot of fear about the future. The prayer reframes the future as something to be grateful for, not afraid of.

The second part — “Grant me an awareness of the miracles and gifts” — is a request for mindfulness. It asks us to notice the ordinary as extraordinary. In active addiction, the brain becomes hijacked by the next drink or drug. Recovery is the slow process of rewiring that attention back to life as it actually is. This prayer is one tool for doing exactly that.

The line “Compel me to act decisively when required with urgency or patience always from the perspective of love and abundance” addresses one of the most common struggles in recovery: knowing when to act and when to wait. It pairs urgency with patience — two qualities that seem opposite but work together when guided by love rather than fear.

Using the Eyes of Gratitude Prayer in Daily Recovery

Many people in recovery use this prayer as part of a morning routine. Reading or reciting it before the day begins sets a tone of openness and thankfulness, which can act as a buffer against the resentments and anxieties that often trigger relapse. Gratitude and self-pity cannot occupy the same space at the same time — and this prayer actively cultivates one to crowd out the other.

You don’t need to be religious to benefit from the eyes of gratitude prayer. Like many recovery prayers, it functions as an intention-setting tool. The key is sincerity — reading it slowly, pausing on each line, and genuinely asking for a shift in perspective. Over time, many people find that gratitude stops being something they have to consciously practice and starts being a natural way they see the world.

If you find yourself drawn to this prayer, consider copying it out by hand and placing it somewhere you’ll see it each morning — a bathroom mirror, a nightstand, or the first page of a journal. The physical act of writing it reinforces the words. In recovery, small daily rituals like this can have a surprisingly significant effect on mood, outlook, and the overall quality of sobriety.

Whatever your spiritual background, the Eyes of Gratitude Prayer offers something universal — a reminder to pause, look around, and recognize the gifts already present in your life. In a program built on one alcoholic helping another, gratitude is often called the foundation of recovery. This prayer puts that foundation into words you can return to again and again.
